Peniche prepares Portugal's first artificial wave pool
The Portuguese town of Peniche has approved the initial plans for the construction of an artificial wave pool.
António José Correia, the iconic mayor of Peniche, has given green light for a theme park that will be installed within city limits, only 500 meters (0.3 miles) away from the Baleal surf breaks.
The local authorities and the surf pool promoter are working to get all the necessary authorizations and environmental go-ahead, in order to make an official announcement.
The artificial wave project set for Peniche wants to reduce the impact of seasonality in local tourism and to further increase the revenues per visitor, in the European capital of surfing.
The theme park will feature artificial surfing waves, all year round, as well as many outdoor sporting activities and eco-tourism offers. The Wavegarden surf pool concept is a strong possibility for this spot.
The total investment in Peniche might reach 70 million euros and will create 100 jobs. The surf park will be installed in an area of 2.8 square kilometers.
Peniche is home to one of the best tube riding waves in the world. Supertubos plays, since 2009, a decisive role in the ASP World Tour title race.
